The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has directed the immediate closure of a dredging site in Bogije Community following severe flooding triggered by its overflow after days of continuous rainfall.
According to the council, the directive is aimed at safeguarding lives and property while preventing further harm to the affected community.
The recent downpour, which has persisted across parts of Lagos State, caused the dredging site to overflow, resulting in widespread flooding across Bogije Community.
The floodwaters reportedly submerged several residential buildings and business premises, leaving many residents counting their losses.
Videos capturing the scale of the flooding and the difficulties faced by affected residents have since spread widely on social media, with community members appealing to the local government for urgent intervention.
Responding to the crisis, the council identified the immediate shutdown of the dredging site as a necessary step to halt further flooding and minimise the risk of additional damage.
Chairman Olowa reassured residents that the local government was fully aware of the challenges facing the community and remained committed to protecting the lives and welfare of those affected.
He added that further measures were being put in place to address the flooding, reduce its impact, and prevent a recurrence in the future.
The local government also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with relevant officials as assessment, emergency response and remediation efforts continue across the affected areas.
