Heavy rainfall has killed dozens of people and caused severe flooding in parts of West Africa, with Ivory Coast and Ghana among the worst-hit countries.
Local authorities gave the latest update on Wednesday.
In Ivory Coast, the government’s spokesperson said 59 people have died since the rainy season began in May.
NPO Reported on Monday that least 13 people have died in Ghana’s capital, Accra, after torrential rain resulted in severe flooding, according to the fire service which has been involved in rescue efforts
Flooding has also been reported in Benin, while more heavy rainfall is expected across the West African coast in the coming days.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, about 7.5 million people are at risk of flooding in the region.
The rainy season in the Gulf of Guinea countries usually lasts from April to August and returns from October to November. In Sahel countries such as Mali and Senegal, most of the year’s rainfall falls between June and September.
