Hamzat Unveils Security, Infrastructure Agenda For Lagos

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has said Lagos cannot afford inexperienced leadership, pledging to prioritise security, infrastructure, economic development and value reorientation if elected governor in the 2027 election.

Hamzat made the remarks on Friday during a town hall meeting with leaders and members of the Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Lagos CAN Secretariat in Ikeja, where he outlined his vision for the state and received prayers from Christian leaders.

He argued that governing Lagos requires competence, experience and a thorough understanding of the state’s unique challenges, describing the commercial hub as too important for trial-and-error leadership.

“Lagos is not a place to experiment with governance,” he said, stressing that the state’s leadership should be entrusted to individuals with the capacity and knowledge to manage its complexities.

The APC candidate also pledged to strengthen security by enhancing support for law enforcement agencies and ensuring strict enforcement of existing laws against kidnapping.

He vowed to approve the execution of convicted kidnappers where the courts impose the death penalty, saying the state must take a firm position against the crime.

“If anyone is a kidnapper and is caught, the law is now clear. It is going to be a death penalty, and by God’s grace, when I become governor, if any kidnapper is convicted to death by the court, I will sign the death warrant because no human being has the right to kidnap another person,” Hamzat said.

According to him, improving security is essential to attracting investment, boosting economic activities and sustaining Lagos’ development.

Hamzat also promised sustained investment in roads, transportation and other critical infrastructure to improve the ease of doing business and facilitate the movement of residents across the state.

He said ongoing investments in economic and production infrastructure would further consolidate Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s commercial capital, adding that his administration would continue to support the Federal Government’s economic reforms to ensure development reaches communities across the state.

Beyond infrastructure and security, the APC candidate expressed concern over what he described as the gradual erosion of societal values, saying government alone could not tackle the country’s moral challenges.

“We will work together to rediscover our values so that we don’t lose our children and unborn generations to a corrupt society. This is more than government; it will be a joint effort between the body of Christ, government and citizens,” he said.

He urged churches to continue promoting integrity, truth and responsible citizenship through their teachings.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Prof. Stephen Adegbite, said the meeting was organised to engage Hamzat on his plans for Lagos.

Adegbite described the APC governorship candidate as a loyal, hardworking and resilient public servant, expressing confidence in his leadership capacity and assuring him of the prayers and support of the Christian community.

Former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Sarah Sosan, also commended Hamzat’s integrity and commitment to public service, noting that the peace enjoyed in Lagos had been sustained through prayers.

She urged churches to continue praying for Hamzat and his running mate ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The event concluded with special prayers for Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat and other political leaders.
