A civil society organization, Concerned Nation Builder Initiative (CNI), has called for strengthening of the nation’s judicial system for the protection of rule of law and better justice dispensation.
Mr Teslim Sultan, CNI Project Director, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.
Sultan said that a strong, independent and well-equipped judiciary remained the cornerstone of every democratic society.
He said democracy relies on the judiciary to ensure that justice is not only done but must be seen to be done at all times.
“Politicians or higher authorities should stop interfering into the judicial matters; they should allow the law to take its course at all times.
“Corruption, embezzlement and illegality will reduce in our society, if the judiciary is allowed to operate independently without interference, ” he said.
He said that strict enforcement of the law would promote public confidence in the nation’s justice system and discourage criminal activities.
Sultan urged government at all levels to provide adequate funding, modern infrastructure to the judiciary, as well as training for judicial officers and prosecutors to improve the efficiency of the justice delivery system.
He also called on security agencies to collaborate more effectively with the judiciary by ensuring diligent investigation and prosecution of criminal cases, saying that timely justice would serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
He urged Nigerians to respect the rule of law, cooperate with law enforcement agencies and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Sultan said that collective commitment to justice and accountability was essential for national peace, security and development.(NAN).(
