Glasgow 2026: SWAN applauds NSC over prompt payment of bonuses, to athletes…charges Team Nigeria to sustain winning streak

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has  commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for the prompt, transparent, and upgraded disbursement of cash rewards to Team Nigeria’s medalists at the ongoing Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The National Leadership of SWAn gave the commendation In a statement released yesterday by SWAN Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, on behalf of President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin,.

The association heaped praise on the NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade for  prioritizing athletes’ welfare, Stating that the immediate presentation of instant cash rewards at the competition venues, with direct cash deposits into the athletes’ personal accounts, represents a highly commendable departure from past administrative bottlenecks practices.

President Benjamin also lauded the recent upward review of financial incentives for both the athletes and their coaches. He noted that this proactive initiative sends a definitive message that patriotism, hard work, and excellence will always be swiftly recognized and rewarded.

“This timely recognition of our athletes’ achievements will not only increase  their confidence but also serves as a significant morale booster, motivating other members of Team Nigeria to give their absolute best in pursuit of podium finishes,” the statement emphasized.

Consequently, SWAN urged the athletes representing Nigeria at the Glasgow Games to reciprocate the immense support shown by the Federal Government and the kind gesture of the NSC by remaining disciplined, focused, and determined to increase the nation’s medal haul in Scotland.

The association also congratulated the current medal winners for doing the nation proud and expressed the optimism for even greater successes as the Games progress.

SWAN also applauded the ongoing reforms within the NSC, noting  that establishing policies that place athletes’ welfare in the front burner of sports development programme has effectively restored confidence in Nigeria’s sports administration.

Reaffirming its commitment to supporting the growth of Nigerian sports, SWAN pledged to continue promoting constructive engagement, positive narratives, and professional sports journalism to support the NSC’s vision.

The association however called on all stakeholders to rally behind Team Nigeria as they strive for sustained excellence on the global stage
