France’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup sparked mixed reactions across social media and among supporters, with some fans mocking Kylian Mbappé following the defeat to Spain, while others voiced support for the French team and condemned racist attacks directed at its multicultural squad.
Spain secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over France in the semifinal on Tuesday, ending Les Bleus’ hopes of reaching a third World Cup final under captain Kylian Mbappé.
Following the result, social media was flooded with memes targeting the French captain and celebrating Spain’s teenage star, Lamine Yamal.
One user wrote, “Mbappé cries, Yamal laughs.”
Another fan added, “Yamal the kiddo won.”
Mbappé later admitted France failed to meet expectations in the semifinal.
“We kept finding ourselves outnumbered 3-on-2 in midfield. And against Spain, that’s a real problem… When you put it all together, the result is a defeat. It’s a huge disappointment,” the Real Madrid forward said.
He added, “I don’t think we played the match we wanted to play — whether tactically, technically, or in terms of our overall performance level.”
Reflecting on the defeat, Mbappé continued, “And when you don’t do what you’re supposed to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.
The France captain admitted the missed opportunity to reach another World Cup final was painful.
“It was a dream for us to reach the final, to give our country the chance to keep dreaming and to make history,” he said.
Despite the setback, Mbappé urged his teammates to remain resilient.
“I believe that when you win, you win with your head held high; so when you lose, you have to lose with your head held high, too.”

He added, “But right now, there is immense disappointment. I find it hard to put into words just how disappointed the squad and I are.”
Looking ahead, Mbappé concluded, “Yet even if it might seem a bit robotic at times, we have to pick ourselves up, go on vacation, and move on to the next chapter. Because football waits for no one. We have to start over, put this failure behind us, and learn from it.”
Away from the result, many France supporters expressed concern over racist remarks directed at the team’s multicultural players, particularly after comments made about Mbappé during the tournament.
Reacting to the controversy, 19-year-old supporter Rickey Browne said, “It’s very unfortunate that anyone, especially the French players, have to go through something like that.”
He praised the team’s response, adding, “I’m very proud of how the team has rallied behind [Mbappé]. He’s still smiling in practice and being thankful. It just shows when people try to drag you down and try to pull you down for something like our skin color; it’s all about how you respond.”
Browne also described the French national team as a source of inspiration.
“I think [France is] just a huge inspiration to us of the minority. They’re showing us that even though there’s a perception with our race, that we’re viewed as lower, we can still do the things that everyone else can. It’s a truly remarkable team that has given inspiration to us in the minority community.”
Another supporter, Shyam Nair from India, criticised comments questioning the identity of France’s players.
“I believe it’s quite unfortunate,” he said.
He added, “FIFA is something that I always look forward to, for connecting the world together… even as a kid growing in the southernmost part of India, just watching all these things, FIFA was an opportunity for me to connect to the world.”
French supporter Toni Muziotti also defended the country’s diversity.
“I think people just get a little jealous about multicultural countries like France,” he said.
He continued, “We’re really used to different people from different cultures… It’s just kind of ridiculous because we’re so used to living with people.”
Muziotti concluded by stressing that diversity defines modern France.
“Where I come from, there’s Black people, Arab and Chinese. You’re gonna see everything. To us, we feel kind of bad for them, not being able to realize a French national team could have people of all colors, and it doesn’t matter to us.”
While Spain celebrated a place in the World Cup final, France’s exit not only ignited football debates online but also renewed conversations about racism, identity and diversity in international football.
