THE Chairman of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr Taoheed Taiwo, has warned residents of Jakande Estate and adjoining communities against dumping of refuse on major roads and medians.
Taiwo gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
He described the practice as a serious environmental concern.
Taiwo said the practice was a major source of blocked drainage channels and environmental pollution.
According to him, it also increases the risk of flooding, particularly during the rainy season.
“The indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the expressway is unacceptable and contrary to environmental sanitation laws of Lagos State.
“We cannot continue to allow the actions of a few individuals to endanger the lives and well-being of the larger community,” he said.
The council chairman said the local government had intensified sanitation campaigns on environmental sustainability practices.
He said it was also working closely with relevant state agencies to identify and prosecute offenders violating waste disposal regulations.
“We are collaborating with environmental officers and other relevant agencies to monitor black spots where refuse is often dumped.
“Anyone found disposing waste illegally will face the full weight of the law because environmental protection is a collective responsibility,” he added.
According to him, residents should make use of approved waste collection operators and designated refuse collection points.
“We have made provisions for proper waste disposal, and residents should patronise accredited waste operators.
“Keeping our environment clean is not only the responsibility of government but also that of every resident,” Taiwo said.
Taiwo appealed to community development associations to support the council’s environmental sanitation drive.
The chairman appealed to landlords, market leaders and youth groups to help educate residents on proper waste management practices.
Advising them to report environmental offenders, Taiwo said sustained public enlightenment remained critical to achieving a cleaner and healthier environment.
He added that community participation was equally critical.
According to him, environmental sustainability can only be achieved through shared responsibility.
The council chairman stressed that a clean environment would improve public health.
He added that it would enhance the aesthetic appeal of the community and reduce flooding and disease outbreaks.
Taiwo said: “We want Ejigbo to remain one of the cleanest council areas in Lagos State.
“I therefore appeal to all residents to obey environmental laws, support government initiatives and take ownership of their surroundings for the benefit of present and future generations.”(NAN)
