The latest conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified tensions across the Middle East. The US has continued strikes on Iranian military targets, while Iran has responded by attacking American military bases in Gulf countries. Amid the escalating conflict, US President Donald Trump said the interim agreement with Iran had come to an end. However, the current dispute is largely linked to disagreements over the implementation of the agreement signed by both countries.

What Does Article 5 of the US-Iran Agreement Say?

Article 5 of the US-Iran agreement states that Iran will hold talks with Oman on the future administration and maritime services of the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions are to be conducted in line with international law and the sovereign rights of the coastal countries bordering the Strait of Hormuz, in coordination with other Gulf nations.

Agreement Recognised Iran’s Role in Hormuz

Under the agreement signed by Donald Trump, Iran and other Gulf countries, including Oman, were given a role in the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran now says it is exercising those rights by directing ships to follow designated shipping routes through the strait. Tehran claims that vessels using routes outside the approved channels have been targeted.

Experts Link Current Crisis to the Agreement

Some experts believe the current Strait of Hormuz crisis stems from the agreement signed in June 2026. They argue that the deal gave Iran greater authority over the strategic waterway, allowing it to issue navigation rules. According to this view, Iran later instructed all ships to use the northern shipping route and took action against vessels that used the southern route near the Omani coast.

Key Details of the US-Iran Agreement

  • The United States and Iran signed a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in June 2026.
  • The agreement aimed to end the conflict, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and begin talks on nuclear disarmament.
  • Both countries now accuse each other of violating the agreement while continuing military attacks.
  • The agreement recognised Iran’s role in the administration of the Strait of Hormuz and granted it certain responsibilities under the terms of the deal.
