Dame Dash has seen enough Yankee hats, especially on Jay-Z’s stage.
The Roc-A-Fella co-founder tore into Jay-Z’s recent Reasonable Doubt anniversary performances during an interview with The Art of Dialogue, calling the Yankees-heavy presentation “corny” and questioning whether the celebration had become more about selling products than honoring the music.
“I could understand the Yankee moment, but not Yankee everything,” Dash said. “The whole thing was just everything seemed like it was about merch.”
Dash repeatedly mentioned the amount of Yankees clothing worn during the shows and suggested the production resembled an advertisement. “That sounds like a marketing commercial,” he said.
He was unimpressed with the number of longtime collaborators who showed up to support Jay. Although Dash called one reunion “a dope moment,” he went on to say, “It was the same show… I want to see some young fly fresh. I want to see somebody pass the torch.”
Dash helped build Roc-A-Fella alongside Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke and said its original identity was all about independence.
“Reasonable Doubt was anti-commercial,” he said. “We were independent.”
The music executive acknowledged that some of his jabs were intentional and useful for promoting his own work. “I’m trolling them. I’m having fun with it,” he said.
