No fewer than 52 inmates in custodial centres across Kano State are participating in the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by the National Examinations Council and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies as part of the educational rehabilitation programme of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The candidates comprise 41 male and 11 female inmates drawn from various custodial facilities across the state.
During a monitoring visit to the examination centres, the Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Yusuf Ahmad Lakpene, said the initiative underscores the Service’s commitment to rehabilitating inmates through education and preparing them for successful reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
He urged the candidates to conduct themselves with honesty, discipline and integrity throughout the examinations, describing education as a key instrument for personal development, behavioural reform and reducing the chances of reoffending.
Lakpene also praised Abba Kabir Yusuf for sponsoring the registration fees of the inmate candidates, saying the gesture reflects the state government’s commitment to promoting inclusive education and supporting rehabilitation efforts within custodial centres.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Correctional Service’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities for inmates as part of its broader rehabilitation and reintegration strategy.
The Controller was accompanied on the inspection by the Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, DCC Ibrahim Isa Rambo, the Head of the Non-Custodial Unit, ACC Musa Muhammad Kibiya, and the Principal of the Custodial School, DSC Ahmad Muhammad Alkanawi.
