The death toll from the violent unrest at Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka’s western coastal town has climbed to 25, authorities confirmed on Monday. The violence erupted on Sunday after clashes broke out between two rival groups of inmates at the overcrowded prison. Fresh unrest was reported on Monday after rioting prisoners allegedly seized firearms from prison officials, escalating the situation.
Violence Leaves 19 Dead, Over 100 Injured
According to Hiru News, citing officials, at least 19 people were killed and more than 100 others were injured in the clashes and the violence that followed inside Negombo Prison. Security was tightened across the prison, with the Police Special Task Force and riot control units deployed to bring the situation under control.
Clash Linked to Rival Inmate Groups
Initial investigations suggest the violence began after a confrontation between two groups of inmates. One group was allegedly involved in drug trafficking activities inside the prison, while the other opposed those activities.
To prevent further violence and restore order, authorities transferred three inmates to the Pallansena Prison Camp on Monday.
Special Investigation Ordered
Prisons Department Media Spokesman AC Gajanayake said a special investigation has been launched into the incident. He said the Commissioner General of Prisons has appointed a dedicated team to conduct a detailed inquiry into what caused the violence and how it unfolded.
Police have also launched a separate investigation into the prison unrest.
Justice Minister Seeks Detailed Report
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has asked officials to submit a detailed report on the deadly clashes at Negombo Prison.
A magisterial inquiry was held on Sunday, while authorities continued efforts on Monday to restore order and investigate the circumstances that led to the violence.
