British police have arrested 12 people following an investigation into an alleged threat targeting a major Islamic gathering in Suffolk, although no one has been charged in connection with the suspected plot.
The investigation began after authorities received intelligence suggesting there could be a potential threat to the annual Ijtima event, held between July 9 and 12. The religious gathering attracted about 15,000 Muslims from across the UK and beyond for prayers, lectures and community activities.
As a precaution, armed police officers were deployed to the venue while counter-terrorism investigators launched urgent inquiries to assess the credibility of the reported threat.
During the operation, 12 people were arrested. Eight were detained under the Terrorism Act, while four others were arrested on separate grounds. However, seven of those held under terrorism laws have since been released without charge after investigators found no evidence linking them to the alleged threat.
One 42-year-old man has been charged with two weapons-related offences involving the possession of extendable batons and a stun gun. He is expected to appear before a magistrates’ court on July 20.
Police, however, stressed that the recovered weapons are not believed to be connected to the suspected threat against the Islamic gathering.
Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, Helen Flanagan, said the investigation moved quickly after authorities became aware of information suggesting there could be a danger to the event.
She said extensive inquiries had so far uncovered no evidence to support charges relating to the alleged threat but assured the public that investigations were continuing.
Flanagan acknowledged that the incident had caused concern, particularly within the Muslim community, and pledged that police would take immediate action if any credible threat emerged.
Suffolk Constabulary also maintained a visible security presence throughout the event to reassure attendees and residents while the investigation was underway.
Councillor Ruman Muhith, who attended the gathering and assisted organisers, described the incident as shocking.
He said the community never expected such a security scare in Suffolk, describing the county as peaceful and multicultural. While noting the seriousness of the intelligence received, he praised the swift response of the police, organisers and local residents, whose cooperation helped ensure the event concluded safely without any reported injuries or disruption.
Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to continue cooperating with investigators as inquiries remain ongoing.
