The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2026 has released its annual ranking of the world’s safest and most peaceful countries. The report assessed 163 countries using 23 indicators, including social safety, internal and external conflicts, and militarisation. Iceland retained the top position for the 19th straight year, while New Zealand and Switzerland followed closely. Here are the world’s 10 safest countries in 2026.

Iceland tops the list

Iceland has once again been named the world’s safest country in 2026. The country has no standing army, very low crime rates and a high level of social trust.

New Zealand

New Zealand moved up one spot to become the second most peaceful country in the world. It is known for its political stability and low levels of violence.

Switzerland

Switzerland secured the third position in the Global Peace Index rankings thanks to its neutrality, strong institutions and high quality of life.

Slovenia

Slovenia climbed two places to rank fourth among the world’s safest countries. The European nation continues to score well on peace and social stability.

Ireland

Ireland secured the fifth spot in the 2026 rankings. The country is known for its low crime rate and stable society.

Austria

Austria retained its place among the world’s safest countries, ranking sixth in the Global Peace Index 2026.

Portugal

Portugal ranked seventh on the list. It is widely regarded as one of Europe’s safest and most peaceful destinations.

Singapore

Singapore secured the eighth position and emerged as Asia’s highest-ranked country in the Global Peace Index 2026.

Finland

Finland ranked ninth in the list of the world’s safest countries, thanks to its high standard of living and social stability.

Japan

Japan secured the tenth position in the 2026 Global Peace Index. The country is known for its safety, discipline and low crime levels.
