US-Iran deal: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said the US has reached a “great settlement” to end the war with Iran, with reports suggesting that Trump has put forth five major proposals in the proposed US-Iran deal, which is expected to be signed in Geneva, Switzerland.
What are Trump’s proposals in US-Iran deal?
According to a CNN report, citing diplomatic sources, a memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington is expected to be signed in Geneva, with the proposed agreement reportedly including an extension of the ceasefire, reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a framework for further talks on Iran’s nuclear programme.

Reopening Strait of Hormuz
As per the CNN report, the reopening of the critical Strait of Hormuz waterway is among the chief demands from the US side. The proposal mandates Iran to reopen the Strait without imposing any transit charges, ensuring the uninterrupted movement of energy supplies and commercial shipments.
Maritime traffic through the strategic waterway would gradually return to pre-conflict levels within 30 days of the agreement’s signing, according to the proposal.
60-day ceasefire extension
Another major pillar of the interim agreement is the extension of the current ceasefire agreement. The new deal envisages a 60-day ceasefire between the warring sides “on all fronts”, including Lebanon, beginning immediately upon signing.
The ceasefire extension aims to foster a temporary period of stability during which broader negotiations could continue and a permanent deal to end the conflict can be negotiated, Axios reported, adding that the ceasefire would cover Gaza, Lebanon and other related theatres of conflict.
Sanctions relief for Iran
Under the interim agreement, the United States has offered to lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and providing limited sanctions relief, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News agency reported.
US diplomatic sources confirmed that sanctions relief was on the table, but stressed that it would be granted “based on the progression of the deal and continued engagement in good faith”, although no specific timeline has been outlined, CNN reported.
However, its unclear whether the US has agreed to release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets, a key demand reportedly raised by Tehran during negotiations.
Withdrawal of US troops
According to a Bloomberg report, one of major concessions Washington is offering is the withdrawal of its troops and military assets from areas surrounding Iran, marking a significant shift in the US’ position in the Middle East and addressing a long-standing demand by Tehran to reduce American military presence in the region.
Iran won’t pursue nuclear weapons
Under the agreement, Iran will commit not to pursue or acquire nuclear weapons and addressing concerns related to its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Reports suggest that nuclear provisions in the agreement are broad, and designed to establish principles to hammer out a proper nuclear deal in the future.
What did Trump say about US-Iran deal?
On Thursday, Trump spoke of a “great settlement” that could end the conflict with Iran, indicating that the agreement could be finalised in the coming days. He also suggested that a signing ceremony could take place soon in Europe and may be attended by Vice President JD Vance.
“We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, and we’re going to be subject to finalisation of documents. We should get done over the next few days. We’ll probably have a signing, maybe in Europe,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office.
“The Strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe. I won’t be able to be there, but JD will be there, the Vice President, and some of the people. Steve Witkoff did a great job,” he further added.
How did Iran respond?
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei dismissed reports suggesting that US-Iran deal has been finalised, stating that no final agreement has been reached so far, Press TV reported.
Baghaei said Qatar and Pakistan continue to play an active mediating role, but noted that the diplomatic process has been complicated by the changing stance of the United States.
According to Press TV, Iran had been aware of the status of the negotiations from the outset and that most of the draft text had already been agreed upon, adding that the US repeatedly altered its position during the talks.
“The status of the negotiations was clear to us from the beginning, and the majority of the text had been finalised, but the Americans kept changing their positions,” Baghaei was quoted as saying. He added that Iran would not compromise on issues it considers its “red lines”.
