Volleyball League: Light Spikers defeat Rhino Spikers to seal top spot

LIGHT Spikers Volleyball Club on Thursday finished top of the standings in the 2026 National Division One Volleyball League after defeating Rhino Spikers 3-1 in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the victory was Light Spikers’ 10th consecutive win of the first phase of the league.

Light Spikers lost the opening set 15-25 but recovered strongly to claim the next three sets 25-17, 25-18 and 25-23.

In other matches, Sword Volleyball Club defeated Adamawa Spikers 3-0 and also recorded a 3-0 victory over Katsina United.

Kada Kings beat Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Volleyball Club 3-1, while NAF Rockets overcame Katsina United 3-0.

Speaking after the conclusion of the first phase, Chairman of the 2026 League, Mark Abachi, described the competition as one of the best organised so far.

“The league seems to be the best we have had.

“We have made some good discoveries of teams and players who have shown their capacity in the game,” he said.

Abachi expressed optimism that players discovered during the competition would make positive contributions to the sport.

“We have discovered new players in this tournament that will do the country proud.

“I believe that in the second phase, the players and teams will also do well to gain promotion to the Premier League,” he said.

The chairman also commended the standard of officiating throughout the competition.

“There were no challenges and no complaints about officiating.

“The officials were up to the task, while all logistics were adequately provided by the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Musa Nimrod,” he said.

NAN reports that Light Spikers finished the first phase with 30 points to top the table.

NAF Rockets placed second with 24 points, while Wikki Spikers occupied third position with 23 points.

NAN also reports that the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) 2026 Phase One Division One National League featured 11 teams.

Division Two comprised seven teams each in the men’s and women’s categories.

The championship, which began on May 23, ended on Thursday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. (NAN)
