India is in talks with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to sell some of its flagship defence systems, which include the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the Akashteer air defence network, Reuters reported, citing Indian sources. According to reports, the Gulf country steps up arms ​procurement in the aftermath of the war involving the United States and Iran.

The deal could make the UAE India’s latest international customer for the most sought-after military exports. If it materialises, the Gulf nation would become the fourth international buyer to acquire the BrahMos missile system after Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The missile, jointly developed by New Delhi and Moscow, is widely acknowledged as the world’s fastest operational supersonic cruise missile and can be launched from land, sea, and air platforms.

Talks in the initial stage

Talks between India and the UAE are in their initial stage but advancing rapidly as the latter seeks to strengthen its military capabilities. “UAE has shown interest in a number of our weapon systems, including BrahMos and Akashteer. The talks between India and the UAE are at the initial stages and are progressing fast,” a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Akashteer is India’s indigenous automated air defence command and control system jointly developed by the Indian Army and Bharat Electronics Ltd.
