Rivers Bye-Election Kicks Off as INEC Deploys Personnel, Materials to Polling Unit

The Rivers State South East Senatorial Bye-election has kicked off as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deployed personnel and election materials to polling units.

INEC, in a post shared on its official X handle on Saturday, said personnel and materials are currently being deployed from the Super RAC Centre, Koroma, Tai Local Government Area.

The commission held that the movement is progressing smoothly as officials commence the final phase of preparations to ensure the timely opening of polls.

Recall that the Rivers South East Senatorial seat have been rendered vacant following the demise of former lawmaker, Barry Mpigi, who passed away in a London hospital in February.

The bye-election for the replacement of the late lawmaker will take place across the seven councils that make up the Rivers South-East Senatorial District — Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme, Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro and Oyigbo.

According to reports, 858,573 registered voters are expected to participate in the exercise across 1,629 polling units within the senatorial district.
