THE Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called on Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity, to reject narratives that seek to divide the country.
NSCIA made the call in a congratulatory message to all Muslim Ummah on the occasion of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
The message was contained in a statement signed by the council’s Public Affairs Officer, Abbas Jimoh, on Tuesday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja
The NSCIA said the threats facing Nigeria are blind to religion and other differences, adding that the solutions to the challenges must be united.
“We urge the government to continue dialogue with all stakeholders for immediate and lasting solutions.”
The council urged religious leaders, community influencers, and citizens to promote mutual respect, dialogue, tolerance, and understanding in all engagements.
“The NSCIA), under the leadership of its President-General, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, rejoices and congratulates the entire Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and across the globe on the blessed occasion of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
“His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, had previously directed the Muslim faithful to commence the sighting of the new moon of Muharram on Monday, June 15, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH.
“Consequently, following the verification of sightings by the National Moon Sighting Committees (NMSC) across the country, the NSCIA formally declared the commencement of Muharram, marking the first month of the new Islamic calendar.
“As we usher in the new Islamic calendar year 1448 AH, the Council urges Muslims to reflect on the profound lessons of the Hijrah (migration) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which symbolises faith, sacrifice, perseverance, resilience, unity, and unwavering trust in Almighty Allah.”
The NSCIA noted that the occasion offers an opportunity for individual and collective introspection, spiritual renewal, and recommitment to the values of righteousness, justice, compassion, and service to humanity.
“The Council is aware that the Nigerian nation is navigating one of its most trying periods in recent history. We acknowledge the prevailing atmosphere of fear, anxiety, and hardship.
“The Council is, once again, deeply pained by the persistent threats to lives and properties across the country.
“From banditry in the North-West to insurgency in the North-East and the troubling incidents of kidnapping for ransom that have spread to the South-West and other regions, the safety of citizens remains a critical concern.
“The recent spate of abductions, including those involving vulnerable pupils and teachers, is of national concern that must be addressed with urgency and sincerity.
“We equally recognise the biting economic realities facing the average Nigerian household. High living expenses, food inflation, and unemployment continue to test the patience and faith of the people.”
While the government implements necessary reforms, the NSCIA urged that these policies be accompanied by compassionate palliatives and economic inclusion strategies that reach the poorest of the poor and most vulnerable.
In the face of these challenges, the Council emphasises that Islam is a religion of peace and trust in God coupled with action.
“The council reminds the government that development cannot occur in a vacuum of fear. We support the ongoing reforms in the security and other sectors.
“However, we reiterate that justice and good governance remain the ultimate weapons against insurgency. Leaders must be accountable, and the fight against corruption must continue unhindered.”
The council therefore called on all tiers of government, security agencies, traditional institutions, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to intensify efforts at restoring peace and security across the country.
“Security is a collective responsibility, and we urge citizens to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and cooperative with relevant authorities in the fight against criminality.”
The council also enjoined political leaders and public office holders to place national interest above partisan considerations.
“As the country navigates its democratic journey, leaders must demonstrate integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and commitment to good governance.
“Political actors should avoid actions and utterances capable of undermining national unity, peace, and social cohesion.” (NAN)
