The Oyo State Police Command has debunked reports circulating on social media alleging that schoolchildren and teachers abducted from Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities in Orire Local Government Area were transported to Kaduna State by helicopter.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command described the claim as false, misleading and lacking any credible evidence.
The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the video making the rounds on social media contained unverified information capable of misleading the public.
“The command wishes to categorically state that the content of the said video is entirely false, unverified, misleading and devoid of any factual basis,” the statement read.
According to the police, the allegation does not meet the standard of credibility required for information relating to such a sensitive security matter.
The command assured residents that efforts to rescue the abducted victims remain ongoing, noting that security agencies have intensified operations aimed at securing their safe release.
“The Oyo State Police Command, in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, has significantly intensified efforts to ensure the safe rescue of all abducted victims, reunite them with their families, and bring those responsible for the incident to justice,” the statement added.
The police expressed concern over what it described as deliberate attempts by some individuals to spread misinformation and undermine public confidence in ongoing rescue operations.
It warned that the circulation of false information could create unnecessary panic, mislead members of the public and hamper security efforts.
The command therefore cautioned against the dissemination of unverified reports, particularly on issues relating to public safety and national security.
It also warned that individuals found to be originating or promoting false information aimed at discrediting security agencies would face legal consequences.
The police urged residents of Oyo State and the wider public to remain calm, vigilant and supportive of security operations, while relying only on information released through official channels and verified sources.
Citizens were also advised to refrain from sharing speculative or unconfirmed reports as efforts continue to secure the release of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers.
