PM Modi talks to Iran President Pezeshkian; bats for lasting peace in West Asia, reiterates importance of freedom of navigation in Hormuz

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, and reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as finding diplomatic solutions to bring last peace in West Asia.

What did PM Modi, Pezeshkian discuss?

During a telephonic conversation, the Iranian leader briefed PM Modi on the recent developments in West Asia, while the PM reiterated the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for India and the world, according to an official release by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The Prime Minister welcomed the progress made by Tehran and Washington in their peace negotiations, and the memorandum of understanding they have reached. Modi also reiterated India’s consistent position that all issues must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, the statement said.

PM Modi bats for lasting peace in West Asia

Furthermore, PM Modi reiterated the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region, and for safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce, the statement said, adding that the two leaders also discussed the recent developments in West Asia and the way forward.

“Spoke with the President of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, on the recent developments in West Asia. Welcomed the progress made in the negotiations and expressed hope that continued efforts will lead to lasting peace in the region. Reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait for India and the World,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Pezeshkian invites Modi for Khamenei’s burial ceremony

Earlier, Iranian President Pezeshkian had invited Prime Minister Modi to the burial ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to be held next week.

Reports suggest that the Indian government is likely to send Bihar Governor Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita to the ceremonies as representatives of India.

Iran will hold burial ceremonies from July 5 to 9 for slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on February 28, 2026, triggering the Iran war.
