The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider resigning from office over what he described as failure to fulfil campaign promises and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
In a statement issued by Ibrahim Umar, spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Obi said the recent resignation announcement by the British Prime Minister offers a lesson in political accountability and leadership responsibility.
According to Obi, the British leader’s decision followed public dissatisfaction over economic challenges and the perceived inability of the government to deliver on key promises.
In a post on his X handle titled “Owning Up to Leadership Failures and Political Responsibility,” Obi reflected on Nigeria’s situation and argued that many of the commitments made during the 2023 election campaign remain unmet.
He recalled that before becoming President, Tinubu had criticised former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic hardship, including during the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.
Obi said President Tinubu had promised improvements in electricity supply, security, anti-corruption efforts and citizens’ welfare during the 2023 campaign.
“At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi stated.
He added that concerns were also evident in sectors such as infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption efforts.
“I, therefore, join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi said.
According to him, such a step would promote accountability in public office and strengthen democratic culture in the country.
