The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all individuals allegedly connected to political killings in the state.
The demand was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Oluremi Omowaiye, Head of the Media and Publicity Committee of the campaign council.
The council also accused the Director-General of the Imole Campaign Council, Senator Lere Oyewumi, of attempting to shift public attention from past political killings involving APC chieftains, through what it described as a planned protest over the killing of a 14-year-old boy, Ezekiel Olopade, in Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government Area.
Omowaiye alleged that Oyewumi was seeking to use the tragedy as a distraction from allegations linking him to earlier political violence in Irewole Local Government Area.
He further claimed that the proposed protest over Ezekiel’s death was not driven by genuine calls for justice but was instead aimed at diverting attention from ongoing investigations into the killings of two APC figures, Hon. Saheed Oyegunju and Hon. Remi Abass, who were reportedly killed in February 2023 and February 2025 respectively.
According to him, the late Oyegunju, who served as APC Treasurer in Ward 9, Irewole LGA, was attacked on the day President Bola Tinubu’s presidential campaign rally held in Osogbo. He alleged that eyewitness accounts and video evidence showed Oyegunju was abducted while heading to the rally, with his body later discovered around Oosa Village via Ikire.
Omowaiye further stated that allegations have continued to circulate regarding the involvement of Senator Oyewumi and his associates in the incident, adding that questions remain over the release of some suspects previously arrested in connection with the case.
He also referenced the killing of Hon. Remi Abass, former Chairman of Irewole Local Government, describing it as one of the most tragic political incidents in Osun State’s history. He said Abass was killed within the premises of the Irewole Local Government Secretariat in February 2025.
The council maintained that it was “hypocritical” for Senator Oyewumi to lead public protests demanding justice while, according to them, unresolved questions persist over the deaths of the two APC leaders.
It therefore urged the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that all suspects linked to political killings in Osun State are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
