Edo Queens Football Club of Benin have been crowned champions of thie 2025/26 Nigeria Women Football League Premiership after a goalless last fixture duel against defending champions Bayelsa Queens at the NWFL Super Sick tournament in Portharcourt.
Edo Queens,with the crown on the heads have now qualified to represent Nigeria at this year’s WAFU B qualifiers for a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
This is the second time the Benin based Queens are lifting the women premier league trophy. They lifted it in 2024 for the first time in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.
The coach Moses Aduku led Edo Queens began the Super Six with a 1-0 defeat to Nasarawa Amazons but quickly shrugged off the disappointment and came out stronger in the remaining fixtures. They thrashed FC Robo 4-1 in the second fixture and went ahead to hammer Abia Angels 6-2 in the third before a hard fought 2-1 victory over host team Rivers Angels in the fourth engagement to record 10 points and +7 goals advantage and ultimately secured the coveted women premier league trophy.
After the cagy encounters in Port Harcourt, bringing the super six and the league season to an end, Edo Queen’s Atume Doosuur won an individual award of the highest goal scorer of the league with 13 goals.
In the other final fixtures,Abia Angels and FC Robo settled for 1- 1 draw just as Nasarawa Amazons and Rivers Angels also ended their engagement in a goalless stalemate .
Bayelsa Queens finished second with 8 points (+2 goal difference).
Nasarawa Amazons have been pushed to the third place with 8 points (0 goal difference).Abia Angels are 4th with 6 Points (-1) while FC Robo Queens finished fifth on 4 Points (-2). Rivers Angels are last on 3 Points (-4)
The newly crowned champions, Edo Queens will now represent Nigeria at this year’s WAFU B qualifiers for a place in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has dedicated the triumph to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his unwavering support and commitment to sports development in the state.
Emanuele made the declaration while reacting to the historic achievement of Edo Queens after the final match of the NWFLSuper Six in Portharcourt. He ascribed the successes of the sports commission under his watch to the Governor ,stating that his timely release of funds makes the work easy for him.
heaped praise on the players and technical crew for their outstanding performance throughout the competition. He described the victory as a reward for hard work, discipline, and self belief.
He noted that the team’s ability to recover from an opening match defeat to Nasarawa Amazons showed the true character and fighting spirit of Edo Queens.
“This victory belongs to everyone who believes in the Edo Queens project. The girls have commitment, discipline, and hunger for success. They fought for every ball, stayed focused, and proved that with determination and the right support, they can overcome any challenge,” Enabulele said.
“I am particularly proud of how the team responded after the first game. They did not lose confidence; instead, they regrouped, worked harder, and produced outstanding performances that eventually made them champions. This is a team with character, and they deserve every honour that comes with this achievement,” he added.
The Sports Commission Chairman also commended Coach Moses Aduku and his technical crew for their tactical approach and ability to inspire the players throughout the Super Six campaign.
“The coaches have done an excellent job. They built a team that believes in itself and represents the values of Edo State — resilience, excellence, and unity. This title is a reward for the collective efforts of the players, coaches, management, and everyone who supported the team,” Enabulele stated.
