THE Labour Party (LP) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for correcting the omission of its candidate from the list of contestants for the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20.
The party gave the commendation in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ken Asogwa.
According to the party, INEC had initially excluded it and its candidate from the published list of contestants in spite of meeting all constitutional and statutory requirements for participation in the by-election.
It said engagements with the commission’s leadership led to the correction, resulting in the inclusion of the party and its candidate in the election.
The LP said it was fully prepared for the poll and would offer the people of Enugu North credible and people-oriented representation for the remainder of the Senate term.
The party also expressed confidence in the leadership of INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, describing the commission’s action as evidence of fairness, due process and responsiveness.
According to the LP, the decision has reinforced public confidence in the electoral process and demonstrated the commission’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment for political parties.
The party thanked its supporters, members and well-wishers for their concern, enquiries and steadfast commitment following the earlier omission from the list of contestants.
It outlined the support and vigilance of party faithful as invaluable, noting that their confidence remained a source of encouragement ahead of the forthcoming by-elections.
The LP also wished its candidates in the Enugu North, Nasarawa North and Rivers South-East senatorial by-elections success as campaigns enter the final phase before the polls.
The party expressed optimism that favourable outcomes would strengthen Nigeria’s democratic culture and deepen citizens’ confidence in the electoral process. (NAN)
