Tensions across the Gulf region rose sharply after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a fresh wave of missiles targeting American military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. The strikes reportedly hit near Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and Isa Air Base in Bahrain, following what Iran described as “hostile actions” by the United States in the Persian Gulf and near Qeshm Island.

Explosions were heard in parts of Kuwait as air defence systems were activated. Videos circulating online showed interceptor missiles being fired from Patriot defence systems to counter the incoming threat. Air raid sirens were also triggered in Bahrain, while residents in Erbil, Iraq, reported receiving alerts as regional forces closely monitored the situation.

Why did Iran launch fresh missile strikes?

According to the IRGC, the attacks were a direct response to US actions near Qeshm Island. In a strong statement, the group warned that any further aggression would be met with a “crushing and decisive response”. It added that the “time of hit and run is over,” signalling a more aggressive stance from Tehran.

Did the missiles hit their targets?

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said US and allied forces successfully intercepted the incoming missiles and drones. It claimed none of the missiles hit their intended targets. Two missiles aimed at Kuwait reportedly fell short, while three fired toward Bahrain were intercepted mid-air.

Is this part of a larger escalation?

This marks the third Iranian attack targeting US-linked facilities in Kuwait within a week. Earlier strikes on May 29 and June 1 involved ballistic missiles and drones, some of which caused injuries and damage, including the destruction of a US MQ-9 Reaper drone.

Following the latest attack, Kuwait’s Defence Ministry warned residents to avoid any debris or unidentified objects, as they could be dangerous. Citizens were asked to report such items immediately to emergency services.
