THE Imo House of Assembly has called on Gov. Hope Uzodimma, to direct the state Ministry of Education to begin reconstruction of state-owned secondary schools in Orsu Local Government Area.
The house made the call following a motion sponsored by the representative of Orsu state constituency, Mr Uche Agabige (Orsu), during a plenary session on Tuesday.
Presenting the motion, Agabige recalled that Orsu had faced severe security challenges in the past, which resulted in the breakdown of law and order.
This, he said, led to the destruction of lives and property including most government-owned schools in the area.
Agabige lauded Gov. Uzodimma for boosting education and educational infrastructure in the state through various government programmes.
He, however, observed that Orsu has not benefited adequately from most of those programmes and projects due to what he termed the “escalated insecurity in the past, which resulted in looting and abandonment of schools infrastructure and equipment.”
The lawmaker also commended the government for the successful dislodgment of the non-state actors and restoration of peace in the area.
He prayed the house to urge the governor to direct the state ministry of education, through its relevant parastatals and agencies, to urgently embark on reconstruction and rehabilitation of all dilapidated government secondary schools in Orsu.
Supporting the motion, Mr Clinton Amadi (Owerri Municipal), noted that the educational system in the area was negatively affected by security threats in the recent past.
Amadi added that the ministry should wade in as soon as possible to ensure the schools were rehabilitated to promote a conducive learning environment.
In his contribution, Mr Dominic Ezerioha (Oru West) also noted that Orsu LGA was worst hit by insecurity and urged the government to take immediate steps to improve the educational facilities in the area.
Mr Innocent Ikpamezie (Mbaitoli) also supported the motion, noting that every child in the state was entitled to a conducive learning environment, stressing an immediate action.
Following a unanimous vote in favour of the motion, the Deputy Speaker, Mr Amarachi Iwuanyanwu, ruled in favour of the motion’s prayers.
He also directed the Clerk of the house to convey the resolutions to the Office of the Governor.
