Ibadan, Nigeria – Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has assured residents that the state government is working tirelessly to secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted by suspected gunmen, declaring that Oyo will not witness a tragedy similar to the infamous Chibok schoolgirls’ kidnapping.
The governor gave the assurance while addressing journalists and concerned residents amid growing anxiety over the abduction incident, which has sparked renewed concerns about security in schools across the country.
Makinde said security agencies, including the military, police, and local intelligence networks, have intensified efforts to rescue the victims unharmed and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers. Oyo State will not suffer a Chibok-type school abduction tragedy. Our security agencies are on top of the situation, and we remain committed to protecting every child in our state,” the governor stated.
The abduction has drawn widespread condemnation from community leaders, parents, and civil society groups, who have called for swift action to prevent a prolonged ordeal for the victims and their families.
The governor’s remarks referenced the 2014 kidnapping of more than 270 schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, by the terrorist group Boko Haram. The incident attracted global attention and led to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, with several of the girls still unaccounted for years later.
Security analysts have warned that attacks on schools remain a major challenge in parts of Nigeria despite increased security measures introduced by federal and state authorities.
