The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has urged bicycle riders in Gombe State, to ensure safety while riding on the roads.
The Sector Commander, Mr Samson Kaura, said this on Wednesday during the commemoration of the 2026 World Bicycle Day.
The event took place at the command’s headquarters in Lafiyawo community, Akko Local Government Area of the state.
The theme of the event is: “Boosting Urban Life with Bicycles.”
Kaura said the day was commemorated to promote cycling as a safe, healthy, and environmental-friendly mode of transportation.
He said the event aligned with the Safe System approach and the African Road Safety Charter, which came into force on March 12, 2026.
According to Kaura, riders are vulnerable road users that must be protected under the African Road Safety Charter.
“I call on motorists to share the road and give cyclists adequate space in line with the 1.5-metre safe passing rule,” he said.
Kaura reiterated commitment of the corps to promote non-motorised transportation to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions in the state.
He urged bicycle riders to always use helmets, reflective jackets, and to obey traffic rules while avoiding use of mobile phones while riding.
The World Bicycle Day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017, with the first global observance held in 2018.
FRSC personnel in collaboration with members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), embarked on a six-kilometre bicycle ride around Lafiyawo community, Gombe, as part of activities to mark the day. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
