Gov. Ahmed Ododo of Kogi says citizens’ active participation, patriotism and prayers are critical to building a peaceful, secure and prosperous Nigeria.
In his Democracy Day message on Friday in Lokoja, Ododo congratulated Nigerians on the milestone and urged reflection on the sacrifices of democratic heroes.
He described democracy as “the government of the people, by the people, for the people,” stressing that its power lay not only in elections but in citizens shaping the nation’s destiny.
“As we celebrate today, I urge all Nigerians to remain committed to the preservation and protection of our democracy.
“The gains we enjoy today were secured through years of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment by patriots.” Ododo said.
He admonished citizens to reject actions that undermined democratic institutions and instead strengthened tolerance, dialogue, unity and responsible citizenship.
The governor noted that democracy remained the most credible platform for Nigerians to exercise sovereign will, choose leaders and hold government accountable.
Quoting Kofi Annan, he said good governance thrived on democracy and remained key to eradicating poverty and promoting development.
Ododo congratulated President Bola Tinubu, as a foremost champion of democratic struggle, and honoured the late MKO Abiola as “the pillar of our democratic consciousness” whose fight birthed modern democracy.
“As citizens, let us continue to support and pray for our country, the President, and leaders at all levels.
“Nation-building is a collective responsibility, and our prayers, patriotism, and positive contributions are essential to the realisation of a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.” he urged.
He wished Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day and reaffirmed Kogi State’s resolve to build a stronger nation where democracy delivers hope, justice and prosperity. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
