The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the launch of a full scale investigation into the circumstances leading to the circulation of confidential registration details of Nollywood Actor, Emeka Ike, by Lere Olayinka, an aide to the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Olayinka recently came under heavy criticism from Nigerians for sharing a screenshot of INEC’s administrative webpage which contains Ike’s voter registration details. The administrative webpage is only accessible to authorised INEC members of staff.
Olayinka posted a screenshot of Ike’s voter registration details on his X account, questioning the actor’s eligibility to contest a Federal Constituency seat in Abuja just 15 days after transferring his registration from Imo State to the Federal Capital Territory.
The trouble started when Olayinka attached two images to the post showing INEC’s administrative login portal.
INEC in a statement said that preliminary findings show no external hacking or breach of its systems. Instead, the data was accessed through valid user credentials issued to personnel involved in the ongoing voter registration exercise, but released without authorization.
“The audit trail from the preliminary investigation has enabled the Commission to identify the user account through which the information was accessed,” INEC said in a statement. Relevant staff have been questioned, and all units are cooperating with the probe.
The commission said it is examining technical, administrative and operational aspects of the case to determine individual responsibility and any violations of internal protocols before taking disciplinary action.
The Department of State Services has also launched its own independent investigation, and INEC said it will fully cooperate and refer anyone found culpable for prosecution.
