Nafisat, the estranged wife of popular Nigerian actor Akin Olaiya, has accused the movie star of domestic violence and mistreatment, shedding more light on the circumstances that led to the collapse of their marriage.
The allegations surfaced in a viral video shared on Wednesday, days after reports of the couple’s separation dominated social media discussions.
The development comes shortly after a statement purportedly released by Olaiya announcing the end of their marriage circulated online.
In the statement, the actor allegedly claimed that Nafisat left their matrimonial home without informing him and that all attempts to reconcile with her had failed.
However, Nafisat has now publicly challenged that narrative, insisting that her decision to leave the marriage was driven by issues she experienced during their time together.
Speaking in the viral video, she revealed that she had actually left the marriage several months ago due to what she described as violence, emotional pain, and persistent mistreatment.
According to her, no woman should be expected to remain in an environment where she feels unsafe or subjected to abuse.
“Last few months, I left my marriage because I’m in pain, I’m mistreated. I feel like I did not matter. And nobody is going to stay in a marital home that goes with violence,” she said.
Nafisat explained that, contrary to the impression being created online, she and the actor had been separated long before the divorce announcement became public.
She disclosed that the relationship effectively ended sometime last year and that they had not been living together since then.
Addressing critics who questioned why she left the marriage, Nafisat argued that people should consider the possibility of serious issues behind closed doors before judging a person’s decision to walk away from a relationship.
She noted that it would be unreasonable to assume that a woman would simply abandon her marriage without any underlying problems.
“All the things that they’re talking on social media about the divorce letter, yeah for real, me and my husband are not together anymore for a long time, since last year,” she stated.
“For those of you saying how can the wife just pack and leave when she’s not mad? When there’s violence and something is really going on that you don’t really know about, it changes everything.”
The former couple’s age difference also came up in her remarks. Nafisat disclosed that she had certain expectations from the actor because he was significantly older than her.
According to her, she believed his age and experience would translate into maturity and stability within the relationship. However, she suggested that reality turned out differently from what she had anticipated.
“The age gap is much. Yet everything was going down,” she said.
Despite making the allegations, Nafisat maintained that she would not publicly disclose every detail of what transpired during the marriage.
She stressed that she has no intention of exposing all the private issues she experienced, even though she felt compelled to address what she considered misleading narratives surrounding their separation.
“I can never come out to disclose the main issues in my marriage with him. That is what I can never do on social media,” she added.
“What I’m trying to let you know is that it does not make sense for him to say she just packed her things and left without any issues. It can’t be possible. You guys should just think about it and see if it makes sense.”
The controversy has reignited public interest in the couple’s relationship, which had previously attracted attention during their wedding ceremony in July 2025.
At the time, videos from the event generated widespread reactions online after many social media users observed that the bride appeared unusually serious and reserved while the groom danced enthusiastically throughout the celebration.
The clips fuelled speculation about the dynamics of their relationship, although neither party addressed the reactions at the time.
