The Abia State Government has suspended the Clerk of the State House of Assembly, John Pedro Irokansi, over allegations of misconduct.

The suspension was conveyed in a letter dated May 20, 2026, and signed by the State Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere.

In the same correspondence, the government named Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department of the House of Assembly, as Acting Clerk with immediate effect.

While the government did not specify the nature of the alleged misconduct, it directed Onwukwe to assume full administrative responsibility for the office.

Onwukwe’s new position is dependent on the outcome of an ongoing investigation and any further directives from the appropriate authorities.

The Acting Clerk was also instructed to safeguard all government property, official records, and documents handed over to him in line with existing regulations.

Irokansi, a seasoned civil servant, had served as Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly for approximately 16 years, spanning three administrations.
