No fewer than 17 people have been rescued under the debris of a collapsed three-storey commercial building in Lagos.

This was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) hours after the building collapse.

NPO Reported that the incident occurred around 12pm at Alakija Bus Stop, Satellite Town.

Several occupants of the collapsed building were trapped under the debris with some feared dead.

NEMA however confirmed the rescue of the 17 victims following swift rescue operations by relevant emergency response agencies.

“Upon receiving the alert, NEMA officials deployed to the scene to coordinate response activities and work closely with relevant stakeholders involved in the rescue operation.

“The Agency continues to monitor developments and facilitate effective collaboration among responding agencies to ensure a timely and efficient response.

“As of the time of reporting, seventeen (17) persons have been successfully rescued from the collapsed structure.” The agency wrote.

NEMA further disclosed that the rescued victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving appropriate medical attention while search for more victims continues.

“Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency responders continue efforts to determine whether additional persons are trapped beneath the debris.” The statement read further.

NEMA reassured the public of its commitment to supporting all necessary response efforts.

It pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available from the ongoing rescue operation.
