What is ‘Dark Eagle’? Rs 1420000000 US deadly hypersonic missile that could change US strategy against Iran, its range is…, speed is…

What is dark eagle

Dark Eagle is a US hypersonic missile with 1,725-mile range and Mach 5+ speed, designed for precision strikes, facing delays but seen as key against Russia and China advancements.

What Is Dark Eagle?

Dark Eagle is a ground-launched hypersonic missile system designed for long-range precision strikes. It is built to hit time-sensitive and heavily defended targets in contested areas. The system includes a missile, a mobile launcher, and command-and-control infrastructure, making it a complete battlefield strike solution.

Why Dark Eagle Is Back in Focus

The Dark Eagle, officially known as the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), is back in the spotlight after reports suggested its possible deployment to the Middle East. According to reports, US Central Command has requested the system for potential use against targets in Iran. If approved, this would mark the first operational use of a US hypersonic missile system.

Range and Strike Capability

The Dark Eagle missile is reported to have a range of about 1,725 miles (around 2,776 km). This allows it to strike deep inside enemy territory, far beyond the reach of many existing missile systems. This long-range capability is especially important when targets are located in well-protected or distant regions.

Speed, Flight and Evasion

Dark Eagle travels at speeds greater than Mach 5, placing it in the hypersonic category. It uses a glide body that separates from the booster rocket and moves at high altitude with the ability to change direction. This makes it extremely difficult for traditional air defence systems to detect and intercept.

Technology and System Design

The system is being developed by Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. It uses a two-stage booster system that is also part of the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike programme. A standard unit includes multiple launchers, a command centre, and up to eight missiles.

Cost and Deployment Challenges

Each Dark Eagle missile is estimated to cost around $15 million, while a full battery could cost about $2.7 billion. Despite its advanced capabilities, the project has faced delays and testing challenges. It is still undergoing evaluation and has not yet reached full operational status.
