Bayo Onanuga, a media aide to President Bola Tinubu, has insisted that the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, does not have a history of honouring his promises.

He made this known in the early hours of Thursday via a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.

Last week, Obi and the former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

They are expected to run on a joint ticket under the NDC platform, with Kwankwaso as Obi’s running mate.

During the National Convention of the NDC held in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on 9 May, the party zoned its presidential ticket to the South. The party, however, clarified that the arrangement is for a single term and that power would return to the North in 2031.

Speaking in his latest post, Onanuga, who is the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, questioned Obi’s credibility and his promise to serve only one term if elected president.

He referenced the former Anambra State governor’s political history, arguing that he had previously pledged loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) but later dumped the party for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

He further noted that Obi has a track record of moving across various political platforms over the years.

Writing on his verified handle, Onanuga stated: “If you believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term as president, you’ll believe anything.

“Consider his record: while in APGA, he famously placed himself under a self-curse, vowing never to leave the party that made him governor. He gave his word to the Ikemba, even on his deathbed, swearing loyalty and fidelity to APGA.

“By his own actions, Peter Obi has shown that his word cannot be trusted. His promises are as fleeting as his political allegiances.”
