THE Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), joined African leaders and global health partners to push for faster progress on local pharmaceutical manufacturing and health self-reliance across the continent.
This was disclosed via the organisation’s official social media platforms on Wednesday.
According to the organisation, it participated in the AIM2030 High-Level Breakfast, held on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya .
It said that the meeting brought together government ministers, African Union (AU) institutions, development finance institutions, industry representatives, and global health partners to coordinate action on Africa’s manufacturing and health sovereignty agenda.
It also said that the central focus of the meeting was moving from policy commitments to actual investment and delivery.
President William Ruto of Kenya, who serves as AU Champion for Local Manufacturing of medical products said that they must move from commitments to concrete delivery and investment.
”Africa’s health security depends on our ability to produce and supply our own medical products,”Ruto said.
Also, the Africa CDC Director-General, Dr Jean Kaseya, during a high-level panel highlighted the role of the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism (APPM) in creating a viable market for African manufacturers.
“APPM is critical to creating predictable demand, strengthening market access, reducing costs, improving supply security, and supporting African manufacturers through sustainable procurement systems,”Kaseya said.
The organisation also said that it announced a milestone: the completion of its first APPM tender for essential Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (RMNCH) medicines.(NAN)
