Nigerian activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has urged the Nigerian government to immediately arrest controversial Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, over his inflammatory comments on the rising security crisis in the country.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the call follows Gumi’s recent interview on AIT, stating that herdsmen would not have a source of financing their war machine if they leave banditry.
Gumi said the herdsmen have endured a lot of hardship, with no government sitting down to look into their plight and modernise their lives.
According to the Islamic cleric, bandits are not living a luxurious life, stressing that they sometimes drink from the stream.
He said, “The terrorists need all the money they’re getting from kidnapping. It’s not like they are living luxurious lives. The government is putting too much pressure on them so they need money to finance their war machines.”
Reacting to the viral video of the clergy defending bandits, Deji, in a post via his 𝕏 handle, said terrorists sympathizers should be treated as terrorists, adding that people like Gumi can only survive in a country without government.
He wrote, “People like Gumi can only survive in a country without a government. Terrorists sympathizers are terrorists.
“His words and actions promote terrorism in Nigeria. I call on the government to arrest him to serve as a deterrent to others”.
