RBM Sports FC of Abuja says three of its players are set to move to Spain for football opportunities with Getafe CF in the coming months.
The Team Manager of the club, Stanley Ndubuisi Igbo, disclosed this during an interview on the sidelines of the ongoing Nationwide League One (NLO) competition in Abuja.
According to him, eight players from the club recently travelled to Spain for trials with clubs including Getafe, Granada, and Ceuta, with five of them reportedly successful.
“A few weeks ago, eight of our players went to Spain. Some went to Getafe, some to Granada, and some to Ceuta for trials,” Igbo said.
“Out of those that travelled, five were successful, and three of them are expected to move to Getafe in two months.”
He described the development as a rare breakthrough for a grassroots football club in Nigeria.
“It is not common to see a first-division club in Spain signing players directly from an amateur team like ours. It shows the quality of players we have here,” he said.
Igbo added that the club also has two players with national team experience at the U-17 level, including Chika Sylvester.
He expressed optimism that the players could soon earn invitations to the U-20 national team under Coach Abdul Maikaba.
The manager attributed the success of the players to talent discovery and proper player development within the club.
“At RBM Sports, we focus on talent. We do not collect money from players before they join the team. Once we see your talent, we recruit you,” he said.
Igbo, however, lamented the lack of support for private grassroots clubs, noting that funding remains one of the biggest challenges facing football development in the country.
“We have about 40 players in camp at FO1 Kubwa. We feed them, pay salaries, handle medical bills, and take care of their welfare,” he said.
“It is very difficult because there is little or no support from the government.”
Also speaking, RBM Sports midfielder Eneh Ifeanyi described his experience during the Spain trials as challenging but rewarding.
“It was a good experience going to a new country where you do not know anyone and you are there to prove yourself,” Ifeanyi said.
“There was pressure and tension, but you just have to believe in yourself and your ability.”
The midfielder identified Cristiano Ronaldo as his role model, praising the Portuguese star’s confidence, discipline, and self-belief.
“I admire his confidence and personality the most,” he said.
Speaking on his future ambition, Ifeanyi expressed confidence that his football career would continue to progress positively in the coming years.
“I know my future will be far better than where I am now. I believe there is no limit to how far I can go,” he said.
