Public school teachers in Oyo State on Monday staged a protest over the recent terrorist attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the protesters demanded urgent action from security agencies and Governor Seyi Makinde to rescue abducted teachers and pupils.
Gunmen riding motorcycles had on Friday invaded communities in the Ahoro-Esiele/Yawota axis of Oriire, Ogbomoso.
They attacked Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, L.A. Primary School, Esiele, and Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, abducting students and staff members.
The attack also left an assistant headmaster, Joel Adesiyan, and a commercial motorcyclist dead.
Makinde had confirmed that seven teachers were abducted, while the number of missing pupils was still being verified.
The governor spoke on Sunday after meeting with service commanders and heads of security agencies in the state. Makinde said an Islamic Studies teacher was killed during the attack.
He added that six suspects had been arrested within the affected community, while three other persons of interest were also in custody.
“The information available is that about six individuals have been arrested within the locality. Some of them we believe are informants. Also, three individuals of interest have been arrested,” Makinde said.
The governor said the attackers were believed to be members of armed groups fleeing military pressure in the North-West.
The protesting teachers carried placards with inscriptions such as “Their deaths demand action,” “Say their name, remember their sacrifice,” and “Noble teachers gone too soon.”
