Peter Obi, presidential hopeful of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has said that uniting the country will be his top priority if he wins the 2027 presidential election.

He made this known after being cleared by the NDC presidential screening committee on Tuesday.

Obi painted a picture of the Nigeria he hopes to build, one where mothers feel safe sending their children to school or work, where citizens can travel freely without fear, and where no Nigerian goes to bed uncertain about their next meal.

He also stressed the need to tackle corruption head-on, insisting that public resources must not be converted into private wealth and that politicians must shift their focus from electoral pursuits to the genuine welfare of the people.

The former Anambra State Governor also addressed the length of the screening process, describing it as a reflection of proper democratic practice.

He noted that the exercise was designed to ensure candidates meet constitutional requirements and can provide the necessary documentation.

When asked about being the sole candidate, Obi said he was not certain of that status and that the party would need to officially confirm it before any such conclusion could be drawn.

After the screening, Obi praised the committee, which was chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor Dr Sam Egwu, for conducting a thorough and professional process.

He also commended the party’s leadership for upholding democratic standards.
