NIGERIA Volleyball Federation, NVBF 2026 Phase One Division One National League began brightly for Lights Spikers VC with a straight-sets victory over Wikki Spikers VC.
The Abuja-based side defeated Wikki Spikers 3-0 on Sunday at the Indoor Sports Hall, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The match ended 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 in favour of Lights Spikers after a dominant performance across the three sets.
Lights Spikers controlled the opening set comfortably, securing a 25-20 victory before facing stronger resistance in the second set.
The team, however, maintained composure at crucial moments to edge the second set 25-19 and extend their advantage.
Buoyed by momentum, Lights Spikers returned strongly in the third set and sealed it 25-21 to complete the straight-sets triumph.
Head Coach of Lights Spikers, Uthman Mohammed, described the win as a statement from a side many had underrated.
“It was a good game. Wikki Spikers gave their best, and so did we. Many people saw us as underdogs.
“I told them to watch out for our return. We won Division Two as champions without losing a set. No team took a set from us,” Mohammed said.
The coach said the team spent seven weeks in camp preparing for the competition and building unity among the players.
“What I have inculcated in the players is one spirit, one team, one goal. Volleyball is a collective game,” he said.
In other matches, Kwara United VC failed to honour their fixture against Nigeria Immigration Service, handing NIS a 3-0 walkover victory.
Bayelsa Volleyball Association also failed to appear for their tie against Katsina United VC, resulting in a 3-0 walkover for Katsina United.
NAN reports that the Phase One Division Two National League and the women’s category will begin on Monday.
The competition features 11 teams in Division One and seven teams in Division Two.
The championship began on Saturday and will run until June 5 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. (NAN)
