The Michael Imoudu National Institute For Labour Studies (MINILS) has expended N94.7 million on welfare of the workers in the Institute from 2021 to date.
The Director General of MINILS, Mr Issa Aremu made the assertion on the sidelines of the of the May Day Lecture organised in Ilorin by the Institute.
The lecture had as its topic: “Re-inventing Labour Management Resources in MINILS “.
Aremu said that staff of the institute receive 10 per cent cost of living allowance, while buses have also been provided to cushion the effect of high cost of transportation.
According to the D-G, May Day is set aside to celebrate dignity of Labour and Nigeria has consistently commemorated the day for the past 45 years.
“I commend the Federal Government, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and employers of Labour,” he said.
Aremu commended President Bola Tinubu for labour friendly and labour sensitive policies, adding that the Federal Government has rolled-out measures to cushion the effect of the war in Persian Gulf.
He said that the 2027 General Election in the country would be determined by labour issues.
Aremu also commended the current administration for employing more workers in the public service, rather than retrenching workers.
The D-G said that employment could contribute greatly towards resolving the insecurity issues in the country.
“Let’s govern our space, not by police posts but by industries. Let the boys in the bush replace guns with working tools. Industrialization is the key,” he said.
Speaking earlier, the Acting Head of Department, Labour, MINILS, Dr Moshood Lawal, advised the institution’s management to engage workers effectively and not see one another as adversaries.
He also emphasised the importance of regular training for workers, open communication channel and better remuneration. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
