MEMBERS of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Surulere 1 constituency on Thursday overwhelmingly voted Lagos deputy governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, as the party’s candidate for the 2027 elections.
They affirmed Hamzat during the primary elections held across the six wards in Surulere Constituency 1.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that turnout was initially low due to information gap about the venue of the election.
However,party members later trooped to the various voting centres to cast their votes as information about voting venues became clearer.
The presiding officer for Ward F1&2 at Paddington, near Stadium Hotel , Mr Samsideen Bolarinwa, told NAN that 1,042 party members were accredited for the exercise, adding all voted to affirm Hamzat as the candidate.
He said the results from all local governments and constituencies would be compiled and announced later at the party Secretariat in Ikeja.
Bolarinwa commended the large turnout, saying it reflected commitment to the party and support for Hamzat.
The electoral official at Ward F1 Nathan,who pleaded anonymity, said 1,221 members were accredited and voted, expressing their support for Hamzat.
Also at Ward G3, a electoral official,Tunde Aleshinloye,said 1,865 members were accredited while 1,553 voted.
The APC Chairman at Ward G3, Mr. Taiwo Dosunmu, told NAN that the accreditation and election process was peaceful, free, and fair.
Dosunmu also stated that Ward G3 under Surulere Constituency 1 had been known for peaceful, free, and fair elections, adding that Thursday election was no different.
Speaking after the election, apolitical leader in Surulere Constituency 1, Mr Kehinde Adekoya, commended party members for endorsing Hamzat, saying residents wanted progress.
He assured members of more dividends of democracy, describing Hamzat as a committed and intelligent leader
A former councillor in Ward F2 , Mrs Omotayo Babalola, described the election as successful, saying members were satisfied with conduct.
She said that the outcome reflected the confidence people had in Hamzat.
A member of the State House of Assembly (Surulere Constituency 1) Mr Desmond Elliot, commended party members for their support for Hamzat(NAN).
