THE Federal Government has restored funding support to the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) as part of efforts to revitalise adult education nationwide.
Dr John Edeh, the Director of Literacy and Development, NMEC, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Edeh, who is overseeing the commission, commended the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, for the restoration of the funding.
He also appreciated the Ministers for the strategic measures to strengthen the sector.
Edeh said the renewed financial support had enabled the commission to expand learning centres, train facilitators and supply instructional materials.
According to him, federal intervention became necessary due to weak implementation of adult education programmes at state and local government levels.
“At the federal level, what we really need is adequate recognition of this commission, which the minister has worked assiduously in that aspect.
“For instance, for the past many years now, this commission have been defunded.
But, thank God, with the coming on board of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, he has been able to make sure that the commission’s budget has been restored now.
“He has ensured that we got institutional support fund from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to keep the commission running.
“The minister has also ensured that adult and non-formal education is fully integrated in the World Bank Project,” he said.
Edeh added that the intervention would accelerate literacy programmes and improve access to education for marginalised populations across the country.(NAN)
