A faction of Boko Haram terrorists identified as Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad has reportedly executed more than seven captives who attempted to flee from their hideout in Borno State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday evening, has heightened concerns over the worsening humanitarian situation in parts of Nigeria’s North-East.
Sources disclosed to Sahara Reporters that dozens of abducted civilians, mostly women and children, are still being held under harsh conditions inside the camp.
According to reports, the victims who attempted to escape were captured and executed in front of other abductees.
The bodies were allegedly displayed within the camp to intimidate other captives.
Sources further claimed that about 416 women and children remain in captivity under the control of the terrorist faction.
Some of the children were said to have died from illness, starvation and lack of medical attention.
According to the sources, the terrorists allegedly buried some of the deceased victims within the camp.
The Borno South Youth Alliance (BSYA) raised concern over the situation and called for urgent intervention to rescue the captives.
The group said it had made several efforts through mediation and humanitarian channels to secure the release of at least 50 women and children from the camp.
Speaking on the development, the group said it received disturbing footage on Tuesday showing the execution of some captives who allegedly tried to escape.
“We at Borno South Youth Alliance have tried every possible intervention and humanitarian process available, yet the 416 women, children and a few men in captivity have largely been abandoned to their fate,” the group stated.
The organisation said the footage was intended to draw attention to the plight of the captives and not to promote violence.
“This video is not intended to promote terrorism or any act related to it, but rather to expose the painful reality on the ground,” the group added.
The group further disclosed that several captives were sick and more deaths could occur if urgent intervention was not made.
“Four to five people are already dead. More victims are sick, and some men who attempted to escape have now been killed,” the organisation said.
The youth group appealed to political leaders, Nigerians and international organisations to support efforts aimed at securing the release of the captives.
It urged authorities and humanitarian actors not to abandon the victims, warning that the suffering inside the camp continued to worsen daily.
