Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has been announced as the African Democratic Congress candidate for Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the 2027 election, according to a post on his X handle.
The younger El-Rufai currently represents Kaduna North in the House of Representatives on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. He defected to the ADC after his father was prosecuted in at least three courts by the ruling APC government.
In a post on X, Bello El-Rufai wrote: “I was announced as the elected member to run on the ADC ticket for Kaduna North. I will post the statement tomorrow. This will pain them: they caged the lion and left the cub. Governor aside, unless they try to rig, which they can’t. We intend to begin.”
The El-Rufais also appear to have formed an alliance with a former political rival, Isa Ashiru Kudan.
Ashiru Kudan contested the Kaduna governorship election in 2019 against Nasir El-Rufai and in 2023 against El-Rufai’s anointed candidate, Uba Sani. He finished second in both elections. Kudan is now the ADC governorship candidate for 2027.
Bashir El-Rufai, another son of the former governor, openly celebrated with Ashiru Kudan after the ADC governorship primaries in Kaduna State.
Bello El-Rufai later shared photos of himself, his brother Bashir, and Ashiru Kudan in what appeared to be a victory celebration shortly after the former lawmaker won the party’s governorship primary.
