As talks over the Iran conflict continue to face delays, US President Donald Trump’s sharp rhetoric has now extended to Oman as well. During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump warned that no country, including Oman, would be allowed to control the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
His remarks came after reports claimed that Iran and Oman were discussing a possible framework to jointly manage shipping and toll collection through the crucial global oil route.
Trump rejects any control over Strait of Hormuz
Addressing reporters during the Cabinet meeting, Trump said the Strait of Hormuz must remain open for all countries and cannot be controlled by any single nation. Calling it an “international waterway,” he stressed that the United States would closely monitor developments in the region.
“The Strait is going to be open to everybody. Nobody’s going to control it,” Trump said.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most important maritime passages, carrying nearly 20 percent of global oil supplies.
Trump warns Oman: ‘Nobody can control it’
Trump directly warned Oman against supporting any arrangement that could limit international access through the waterway. He claimed that some countries were trying to gain strategic control over the route.
Trump said Oman “will behave just like everybody else,” before adding that the US would take strict action if required. However, he later softened his statement, saying Oman understands the situation and “will be fine.”
Iran Nuclear talks still facing a deadlock
Trump also expressed frustration over the ongoing negotiations with Iran. According to him, Tehran wants a deal, but disagreements over key conditions continue to slow progress.
The US President accused Iran of trying to delay discussions and “outwait” his administration until the upcoming American midterm elections.
He indicated that disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, enriched uranium demands, and future control of the Strait of Hormuz remain major sticking points in the negotiations.
Why Strait of Hormuz is important
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with international shipping routes and plays a critical role in global energy trade. Any disruption in the region can directly impact crude oil prices, fuel supply chains, and international markets.
Regional tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States have already increased concerns over shipping security in the Gulf.
The prolonged instability around the Strait of Hormuz could affect economies worldwide due to rising transportation and energy costs.
