Crude oil tension to end? Japan’s biggest energy company creates ‘Petrol, Diesel’ from air, the company is…, what exactly happened?

What sounds impossible at first has now become reality in Japan. The country’s largest energy company, ENEOS, has developed a technology that can produce petrol, diesel, and jet fuel using carbon dioxide from the air and hydrogen extracted from water. The breakthrough is being seen as a major step toward reducing global dependence on crude oil imports, especially for countries like Japan and India that rely heavily on imported fuel. The company has already set up the world’s first integrated synthetic fuel demonstration plant in Yokohama, where this futuristic fuel is now being produced and tested.

Japan develops fuel from air technology

Japan’s biggest energy company, ENEOS, has created a revolutionary technology that can turn air into usable fuel. The company captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere and combines it with hydrogen made from water to create synthetic petrol, diesel, and jet fuel. This technology could completely change how countries produce energy in the future and reduce dependence on crude oil imports from other nations.

How the synthetic fuel is made

The process works in three major steps. First, the company uses Direct Air Capture technology to separate carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Then, hydrogen is produced from water using electrolyzers powered by renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. Finally, both elements are combined through the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process to create hydrocarbon fuels that work just like traditional petrol and diesel.

Works like normal Petrol and Diesel

One of the biggest advantages of this synthetic fuel is that it can be used exactly like normal fuel. Existing cars, buses, trucks, pipelines and refinery systems do not need any major modifications. According to reports, the fuel has already been tested successfully in vehicles made by Toyota and Hino Motors. Some buses at the Osaka Expo were also operated completely on synthetic diesel fuel.

Plant currently produces one barrel daily

ENEOS has established the world’s first integrated synthetic fuel demo plant in Yokohama. At present, the plant is capable of producing around 159 litres, or one barrel, of synthetic fuel every day. While the production volume is still small, experts believe the technology has massive future potential if production can be expanded commercially in the coming years.

Technology could reduce global oil dependence

Countries like India, Japan, China and South Korea spend huge amounts on importing crude oil every year. If synthetic fuel technology becomes commercially viable, it could reduce global dependence on crude oil and improve energy security. It may also help countries avoid major economic shocks caused by oil supply disruptions or rising fuel prices during global conflicts.

High cost remains the biggest challenge

Despite the breakthrough, the technology still faces major challenges before it can be used on a large commercial scale. Producing green hydrogen and capturing carbon dioxide from the air requires a huge amount of energy and remains very expensive. ENEOS admitted in 2025 that large-scale commercialization is currently difficult because of high costs. However, the company believes the technology could become cheaper in the future as solar power, batteries and electrolyzer systems continue to improve.
