A video emerging from a rural community in Nigeria has captured mourners turning a casket upside down before lowering it into a waterlogged grave a practical measure taken to stop the coffin from floating to the surface.
The unusual scene, which drew widespread attention online, is explained by a combination of trapped air inside the casket and high water tables that are common in many parts of Nigeria during the rainy season.
By inverting the coffin, the trapped air is released, preventing it from being pushed upward by the water beneath.

However, as the video continued to circulate, a growing number of people came to understand the action as a necessary and resourceful response to a difficult situation particularly in areas where draining a waterlogged grave is simply not a feasible option.
