Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion of International Workers’ Day, praising their resilience, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to national development despite prevailing economic challenges.
In a statement personally signed and released on Friday through his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio lauded the contributions of workers across all sectors, describing them as the backbone of Nigeria’s growth and democratic stability.
“On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend and congratulate the resilient, industrious, and patriotic Nigerian workers whose sweat and sacrifice continue to sustain the heartbeat of our nation,” he said.
The Senate President highlighted the indispensable roles played by professionals in key sectors, including education, agriculture, healthcare, and public service. He noted that teachers, farmers, healthcare workers, artisans, traders, and security personnel remain central to the country’s socio-economic progress.
Akpabio acknowledged the mounting pressures faced by workers, particularly amid rising living costs and increasing workplace demands. He, however, reassured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly remains committed to enacting policies that will enhance workers’ welfare and dignity.
According to him, legislative efforts are focused on ensuring a living wage, improving workplace safety, reforming pension systems, and expanding employment opportunities. He added that recent initiatives, including the implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act and targeted welfare packages, underscore this commitment.
The Senate President also urged employers in both public and private sectors to prioritise the wellbeing of their workforce, stressing that a motivated and fairly treated labour force is essential for sustained national productivity and economic prosperity.
Furthermore, Akpabio commended labour unions for their continued cooperation and constructive engagement with the government, pledging that the Senate would sustain its partnership with organised labour to achieve shared goals.
He concluded by reaffirming the National Assembly’s dedication to ensuring that every Nigerian worker can look forward to a future defined by hope, dignity, and confidence, while wishing citizens a joyful Workers’ Day celebration.
